About CHIMS
In August 2015, in the aftermath of the Gorkha earthquakes in Nepal, the Department of Archaeology (DoA) and UNESCO entered into an agreement to collaborate on creating an online database for Nepal's built cultural heritage and movable art objects, including those from public museums and private collections. This initiative received support from the Earthquake Response Coordination Office (ERCO).
Subsequently, the Cultural Heritage Information Management System (CHIMS), an online database, was developed. CHIMS is based on the open-source platform ARCHES, created by the Getty Conservation Institute and World Monument Fund, with technical support from their advisory mission. The primary objective of CHIMS is to build a digital inventory of Nepal's cultural heritage, ensuring easy online access for the public to information on interventions, documentation, assessments, and research outcomes. The system was purposefully designed as a modern site management tool for the Department of Archaeology, consolidating information on conservation status, materials, interventions, maintenance needs, weaknesses, and risks. CHIMS, thus, serves as a comprehensive national inventory of Nepal's historical and cultural heritage, providing structured information about monuments, including their location, history, architectural structure, and details of religious and social activities.
In September 2018, the the Nepal Heritage Documentation Project (NHDP) commenced operations. Run by the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (HAdW), and led by the Saraf Foundation for Himalayan Traditions and Culture in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology (DoA), this project focuses on documenting and describing the (in)tangible heritage of the Kathmandu Valley and beyond. NHDP, supported by the ARCADIA Fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin, engages a professional team consisting of architects, photographers, historians, Indologists, anthropologists, and heritage experts, working alongside an international team of scholars and IT specialists. On World Heritage Day (April 18, 2021), the CHIMS digital infrastructure was officially launched. The Department of Archaeology (DoA) continues to cooperate with the NHDP in the development, customization, finalization, and operationalization of CHIMS. The data repository primarily draws from NHDP's extensive platform, supplemented by data from other sources prepared by the Department of Archaeology, either individually or collaboratively.
The NHDP's datasets stored in its database, Digital Archive of Nepalese Arts and Monuments (DANAM), are mirrored in CHIMS. Datasets include information about the monuments' histories, object details, anthropological data on religious and social activities, architectural details, maps, plans, and drawings. The database offers photographic documentation of inscriptions, monument objects, and views, and if possible, documentation of social and religious activities. General descriptions are largely available in both English and Nepali.
Both CHIMS and DANAM are based on Arches (V7). Its content is shareable and interoperable, guaranteeing long-term access, sufficient storage, and the smooth usability of the monument data inventory.
